One of my students works at Chick-fil-A in South Los Angeles. When I asked her what she spends her money on, she told me how she sends it to El Salvador, where she is from; to support the students she mentors. Her dream is to become a doctor, go back to El Salvador, and give back to the community she spent her first seven years.
Over winter break, students read The Stranger by Albert Camus. They came back excited to discuss ideas of existentialism. One student commented that it was interesting to be in the head of someone who didn't believe there was anything else outside of this life.
Students also created videos with the text of an AP poem prompt. One student who wants to pursue a degree in Film and Cinema created a powerful video including images of the Titanic with the text of the poem "The Convergence of the Twain."
