The students in my classes are from the desert of southern California. Many of them have never seen snow and it only rains a couple of times a year (rains is a loose term...it sprinkles). The most common vegetation they encounter is tumbleweed. Flowers come from the grocery store. These middle school students have no tangible knowledge of plants and how they grow. Their background experience comes from the first grade experiment of growing lima beans, but beyond that, plants are overlooked here in the desert because it's tough to grow things in our climate and our soil. These students would benefit from getting their hands dirty and cultivating some plants.
