The students in my classroom come from many different backgrounds. Their families are from South America, Central America, Mexico, the Philippines, Korea, India, and more. They are eager to learn, vibrant personalities with so much promise. However, none of them come from luxury. In fact, they are far from it. The majority of them grew up speaking only Spanish, and their families work hard just to provide these children with the basic necessities. All of our students qualify for the free lunch program. Asking their families buy basic school supplies for them is out of the question.
