Curious, eager, enthusiastic; these describe my students fairly accurately. They come into class and they want to learn. They want to learn about other people; they want to learn about the world. They want to learn about history; they want to learn about current events.
A good fraction of them were clearly not as advantaged financially as other students, so maybe they haven't been to as many places as other kids, but they're just as inquisitive about the world. They're just as worldly; they've found their refuge in their books. All of my students have found worlds they love in books, which is why my students love language. They love words; they love the ideas they can convey; they love the worlds they can create from their own imaginations in their writing.
