I am teaching a very diverse group of second graders with a range of learning challenges. While some are still working on learning the English language, others are working on learning the foundations of literacy. They are highly active yet enthusiastic about learning. Keeping them engaged is a challenge. They are mostly Latino students from a low socioeconomic background community. Most of the students at our school qualify for reduced lunches because of their low income levels. Many of the families are struggling to make ends meet. It is easy to understand why they do not own computers or have access to the Internet since many cannot afford a home phone line. These families are on survival mode and depend on our school to provide the education and resources needed in order to prepare our students for their future. While our school does have a computer lab, the time spent there is not enough. Our students need to have immediate access to computers throughout the day.
