The First Graders in my class are excited about learning and are by nature incredibly inquisitive. They range in abilities, from children who are reading above grade level to those who are still learning their letters and sounds. This is the age when teaching the joy of reading is crucial. Half of my students are English Language Learners, languages ranging from Korean, Filipino, Spanish, and Hindi. We have a high population of students who stay at our school for one or two years, then move either within or out of the district or out of the country. Therefore, the experience they have in my classroom is critically important because First Grade lays the foundation for social and academic skills.
