I met my students as first graders in the dual language program. They are beautiful children in all respects. I have followed them to second grade and have been delighted to see their growth as readers, writers and come together as a community of learners. Their reading levels range from first to second grade. There are several struggling students who are not quite at grade level yet, but they have amazed me with their academic growth and the effort they make daily, especially in acquiring two languages. Unfortunately, they are economically disadvantaged and live in a poor community where local mini markets and small businesses are marked with graffiti. However, despite their situation my students have good attitudes and are eager to learn.
