My students will be using the recorder to learn how to play melodic music independently. This will be their first time playing their own instrument and learning to read music fluently so that they are successful at this endeavor.
My 4th grade students always look forward to this rite of passage and feel "grown up" learning how to play an instrument of their own. It makes all the learning, up to this point, connect to a level of relevance that students appreciate. The ability to learn to play songs they like is very motivating. Many students don't like to sing because it is too vulnerable, but they thrive in music when allowed to play instruments!
