My class is comprised of twenty-four second grade students, who range in age from 7 to 8 years old. Twelve are boys and twelve are girls. The ethnic mix comprise of Latinos and African-Americans. Although the students are English language proficient, Spanish is the primary language spoken in most homes. One student receives special services for speech and language. My students vary in academic proficiency levels, yet they have high expectations for themselves.
According to a recent survey, most of my students love mathematics. Reading and Language Arts was their third favorite. Many of the students participate in before and after-school programs because their parents or guardians work more than one job and need assistance with child care and homework support. The students attend an urban and densely populated school of 1,100, in a low economic community. Since most of students are high-risk, the school qualifies under the Title I federal funding program to improve academic achievement.
