One of the most effective ways to teach writing is to use Mentor Texts. My students will benefit by looking and reading examples of good writing, especially when that writing is published work done by professional writers. My students will use their prior knowledge to understand and use the writing process. Mentor Texts will allow us to have discussion during small group and whole group instruction, specially because we will read aloud to make sure that everyone reads the mentor text and my slow readers will have a sense of accomplishment because they wont be left behind. I will emphasize their attention on a well written sentence or paragraph and dig deep from diction to structure to alliteration. I will use Mentor Texts to teach my student about narrative, informative, persuasive, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry styles of writing. I know at the beginning my students will be shy, and they will want to imitate, but that is a natural process. Slowly they will gain confidence and create their own amazing writing pieces.
Mentor Texts will inspire my students to create effective pieces of their own.
