My students attend a public middle school in an urban district where most come from low-income families. They are in the 7th grade with reading levels ranging from 1st to 7th grade. Although most students struggle with reading, they try their best to get through class. They are very willing to learn. Most of my students don't have time for independent reading at home because of family responsibilities so they don't have the time to practice.
