My Independent Study students are often at risk of dropping out of high school because they need to work, they are a parent, or because the environment in their public school is not working for them. Many students are missing credits, need Intervention services in English and Math, or have other life situations which makes traditional school difficult. We have some students who work in Independent study because their parents choose to allow them to pursue other activities such as ballet, art, church activities, etc. A small number of students attend my school due to illnesses. Altogether, we serve a diverse group in students. Our site is a Visual And Performing Arts site, where the Independent Study teachers are also trained in Drama, Music, Dance and Art. Students who may not do well in English, Math, Science and Social Studies have the opportunity to work with professional artists in all areas of the arts.
