My students include first through fifth graders. They come to the reading lab daily for reading intervention as they are struggling readers. Although many of my students are below grade level in reading, they come to reading lab happy and anxious to learn the strategies necessary to help them improve.
Each day, we begin our session with a daily read, which is basically reading a fluency passage. The children are given one minute to read as much as they can and their score is recorded. It is amazing to see their growth from Monday to Friday. They feel so much pride and success when they see their fluency scores go up.
My students really have a desire to become better readers and I work hard to keep them motivated. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area and these children lack exposure to so many things that we take for granted. Improving the reading skills for these children is the key to making a difference in their future.
