I teach in a dual immersion (Spanish/English) third grade classroom in California. In our area, the majority school aged population is now Hispanic. Half of my students are native English speakers and half of them are native Spanish speakers. Our goal is to have children leave our school bilingual, boltered and bicollateral. Most of my students come from a Mexican or El Salvadorean background, both cultures with a rich heritage in the arts. However, most of my students don't have the opportunity to experience this culture first hand. They cannot afford art classes at the local studios and the school no longer provides these enrichment activities. I would like to help give them a broader range of experiences in the arts, starting with clay!
