I am a teacher at a public elementary school in East Boston in a high poverty area. I have 8 students in a K0-K1 classroom for children with autism. I have 7 boys and 1 girl in my classroom. There are two verbal students and the rest have limited verbal skills and use pictures and PECs books or signs to support communication. They benefit from a very structured schedule, a predictable routine and visuals of daily rules and routines. We spend our day working with students on achieving greater independence, developing academic and social skills, and increasing communication.
