My 10th and 11th grade SDC students are a mix of students with different specific learning disabilities. Most of our students live with either single parents or in group homes. Aside from their disabilities they go to school with varied socio-emotional baggage. Motivating them is always a teacher's day-to-day struggle. But even with these problems, there are still many of them who show interest to learn. Our school is a title I school located in the South Central area, in which most families or guardians are low income earners. Our students come to school without supplies. If the school does not have available supplies, we teachers have to find means to provide notebooks, pencils and papers and other supplies. Personally, I buy supplies at a discount store so I could provide notebooks and papers for my students. But these do not stop us from aiming high. I set very high learning goals for my students. I want them to think that poverty is not a hindrance to success.
