Middle school math students need extrinsic motivational factors to become excited by and engaged with the subject matter. Low performing middle school students require additional motivational strategies and techniques to access the learning standards.
As public middle school students in the state of California, our students are held accountable for learning the most rigorous math standards in the nation. Furthermore, the state of California will hold our middle school students accountable for the California Math Standards learned in middle school through the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Success on the CAHSEE is affected by a student's level of proficiency on the middle school math standards as well as the level of English proficiency. The level of English proficiency of our students ranges from beginning ESL to fluent English proficiency. Our student body is composed of approximately 1200 students (grades 6 - 8) from underserved communities that have diverse learning needs.
