City College Academy of the Arts is a wonderful high needs school in my opinion for two overriding reasons. Number one: it is guided by a warm, caring, knowledgeable, flexible and supportive principal. Student's interests rather than ego are what drive her decisions. Secondly, the school's mission to prepare every student for college credits in high school, has tremendous buy in from teachers and parents alike. Teacher's dedication to this mission can best be seen by either staying after school and seeing how many teachers remain after hours to tutor students or by the recent adoption of a reading period, where all teachers from all subject areas took upon themselves to teach reading to kids in addition to their normal load. Speaking about the school doesn't do it justice. I recommend coming down to see it for yourself. I personally am fortunate to teach sixth grade math to two wonderful sixth grade classes.
