My students enjoy reading, however most have very few books at home to read independently. Our school is located in a high poverty area and only 5 of my 32 students speak English as their 1st language. Many come from the Middle East and Mexico and our school provides them with a safe place to learn. Unfortunately, like most schools, our budget has been cut so greatly, that money for purchasing books is not available. All of my students enjoy a good story and when I read books like Maniac Magee and The Phantom Tollbooth aloud, they were able to immerse themselves in the rich language that these books provide and enjoyed wonderful stories.
