My 4th grade students are from various minority backgrounds. They are good kids who just need a teacher to show them how truly wonderful they are. Many are eager to learn despite their surroundings. Some students come from tragic backgrounds, are hungry, unkept and are still expected to perform at their fullest
potential every day, even when they are not feeling their best.
School-wide we are desperately trying to motivate our students to learn in order to keep them off the streets. Our school is nestled in a poverty stricken neighborhood. About 95% of our students receive free our reduced lunch. We do not have a PTA and therefore, teachers are forced to pay for some school supplies themselves. We are in the process of enriching our classroom libraries so that we can promote a love of reading during our Reader's Workshop literacy block.
