I teach second grade in a Title 1 underperforming school. Many of my students come from homes where books are not available. My classroom is the only source of reading materials available to them and we are quickly reading through the books I currently have on hand. Not only are my students learning the necessary skill of reading, but they are also acquiring English as a second language. As a result, many are a grade level or more behind in their reading level. I believe that each of my students is capable of reading at grade level but the appropriate books are necessary to achieve this goal. In order to properly prepare each of my students for college, I need to give them every opportunity possible to read books that will improve their reading level. My students understand that knowledge is power and they want to learn and be successful. They understand the importance of reading as a life skill and they are eager to read more and more books.
