I have a diverse, yet enthusiastic class that is motivated to learn. The level of ability varies greatly, however, they work together cohesively toward their own individual goals. My first grade class consists of 18 students: 10 boys and 8 girls. I have two children that have qualified for the gifted program, four children in my class have Individualized Educational Plan's (IEP's), and one ELL (English as a Second Language) student.
My goal, as a classroom teacher, is to create a class that has a positive atmosphere, where students of varying abilities can coexist, and learn from one another. This noncompetitive environment allows them to take risks, and thus, discover new skills from each other. It is amazing where the beautiful minds of first graders can take a little idea, and how quickly that seed can blossom into a whole new inspiration.
