My students are form a very low economic status and background in LA. Almost all of them have been exposed to poverty and some sort of violence in the neighborhood or family, and it is hard for them to believe that there is more to life than where they are at. As old as they are (in HS.) most of them have not even used a color pencil or watercolors before they come to my art class. They have never had any art classes before. So you can see that their imagination has not been nourished and nurtured like some others. I have seen extreme changes in a lot of my students since they have started art. A new world has been opened to them. I often tell them that art does not have to be complicated.
