The staff at my school voted, and they unanimously agreed I have the best group of children in the whole school. Other classrooms have students who run out, roll around on the ground, or curse teachers out. After only one week of school, I already feel so lucky to have this group. Yet, surprisingly, they come from some of the hardest backgrounds I've ever heard of. Some of my students have lost both of their parents - through abandonment, incarceration, AND/or death. I have students who are tardy every single day because their parents are too high to wake them up for school. Growing up in an extremely urban area of San Francisco, surrounded by gangs, my students face stressors and pressures I can't imagine facing as a child. But when I'm in front of them, sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing up and down, all I can see is a room full of big personalities that are eager to learn. I want to give them the opportunity to succeed early in life, setting their futures on a better path.
