My third grade students are children of lobstermen, store clerks, lumberjacks, daycare providers, sail makers, and small business owners. Sixty-five percent of our K-6 school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. They are challenged with infamously high rates of poverty, domestic violence, addiction, and relatives in prison. Over half are being raised by one parent or even a grandparent. But they are rich in other ways.
My students love to read and learn. They help others through community activities, writing to elderly shut-ins, cleaning the roadside, reading to younger students, and collecting for food drives. I provide them with a consistent, safe, loving, joyous learning environment. My students know I honor their individuality, ignite their creativity, and tempt their curiosity. I KNOW my students, and I know they can turn their lives around -- with courage, persistence, and a good education.
