My students live in a rural impoverished area of a small town in California. Many of my students have moved to the area because their families have lost their jobs and houses and have moved in with family members. Despite this, my students are energetic and motivated first grade students. They love to read, work on math, and they are incredible writers! They like to perform plays and have freeze dance parties when they have earned a reward. While they don't have much parental support at home they work hard in class and the majority of them are making their benchmarks. My students go to school at a Title I, K-8 public charter school. We have an emphasis on stewardship of the environment and community service. Our school is going through very tough budget cuts so there is no extra money for classroom furniture supplies.
