Our school is located in an urban area, just outside a major Connecticut city. Our school population is very diverse; over thirty-six percent of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, our minority population is close to 50%, and over 14% of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language. In fact, there are over 14 different languages spoken by the families in our school. Many of our students do not have books to read for pleasure at home. They come to school eager and willing to learn, but are often lacking in vocabulary and life experiences.
