Our Title 1 school has a few combination classes. This lets us keep our class size down, but makes it difficult for the teacher to cover the important material thoroughly in each grade level without disrupting the learning of the opposite grade level. In our combination class we have 2nd and 3rd graders working collaboratively and sharing ideas. This generally works very well, but especially in science and social studies, where each grade is learning something different, we are often disrupting each other. The students are developing strengths to become independent learners and would benefit from the opportunity to tune out disruptions while focusing on their own work.
