My students are diverse racially, mixed grades, but all have an innate desire to serve their school and peers . The school is located in a large urban city. The majority of our students live in the the surrounding community which is economically challenged and has limited resources. The area is known for their high crime rates, homicides, drug use and high teen birth rates. Over 95% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. In recent years, there are increased numbers of immigrants and unaccompanied students. Over half are raised in single parent households or by a grandparent. Our students face academic challenges due to trauma, frequent transitions/mobility and learning deficits. We believe in taking a holistic approach to educating our students. My class of student ambassadors the key to building connections among students, faculty and staff and bridging social-emotional learning with academics.
