I teach eighth grade social studies and language arts to two groups of at-risk students in a rural district middle school. One group is an inclusion classroom with 10 students with learning disabilities. My other group is a class of students that have been retained at least one time between kindergarten and sixth grade. These students have been placed in eighth grade and are being taught a combined curriculum. If they are successful through passing all of their classes and their end of grade tests, they will go to high school and be caught up with their age group.
