What a better why to teach the plant and insect life cycle than starting a hands-on garden! I started teaching elementary 4 years ago when my daughter started school. She is a very hands-on and creative child (later to find out she was gifted). But without using her hands to learn she needed something visual. I felt that if my own child needed to use her hands and eyes to make meaning of a lesson, then why was any other child different? Therefore, I have approached teaching in a whole new light. I have taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, and now TK1 (a.k.a. Transitional kindergarten to first). My students need this "extra" year to develop both emotionally, socially, and academically. Our school recently opened 2 years ago as a sister school was at capacity. So, we are starting everything from scratch. Most of our students are high need at 51% free and reduced lunch.
