I am a first grade teacher at a specialized public school in Lansing, MI. We have a 57% refugee population amongst our student body. As a teacher I strive to encourage parental and family engagement, but often our families may feel isolated by the cultural differences and language barriers from relocation. I do not fully understand the challenges they face, but I desire to help them feel more comfortable to embrace our school as an extension of their family. The majority of my students experience financial limitations receiving free breakfast and lunch. I believe that every student deserves a chance at a successful education, so I do whatever I can to help ensure their educational needs as well as their basic needs are met. A BIG difference is what I want to make!
