My students live in a rural and high poverty area. Quite a few of them live with their grandparents and have parents in jail or who are unable to care for their children. Others have parents who work long hours to provide and aren't able to get outside and play with their kids. The majority of my students are Spanish speaking and struggle to learn because of lack of support at home because their parents aren't fluent in English.
They love to play soccer but at times we don't have a ball to play with, so I invent games to keep them moving. The school I teach at works to get our students to grade level so they are successful as they move forward in their schooling. Thus, physical education isn't a top priority since budgets are tight. We are required to teach the standards without materials to use. This includes P.E. standards. Many of my students don't have luxuries like a new soccer ball They don't have a school that can provide experiences they can't get at home.
