My middle school is located in a rural area of North Carolina. Our students are respectful and hard-working, and their parents are supportive and involved in their education. Our school's focus is on improving literacy.
I work with a group of four students each day to improve reading skills. These middle schoolers have difficulty with fluency and comprehension. My sixth grade group this past year included a young man who read at the third grade level, an ELL student who could decode words but did not understand vocabulary, a young lady with illiterate parents at home, and another young lady who had great difficulty decoding. These students did not see reading as a pleasure; for them it was a mountain to tackle, and they toiled to get to the summit. My desire was to help them gain confidence in their reading ability and see reading as a fun activity.
