I teach at a Title I school, meaning 60% of my children live in poverty, and the other 40% come from middle class homes. My children are talented, eager, warm, and playful. They are 450 boys and girls, equally balanced with regards to race, and who create for me a joy I cannot describe. Sometimes, the only time of the day someone stable and loving will come into contact with them is while they are at school, and I work to be that someone. Music sees no color, has no boundaries, and creates a safe space for them to unleash their creative nature. I build relationships with my children, and even though I see them once a week in my class, I connect with them in the hallways, at lunch, and while at recess. They share stories about home that create for me an urgency to meet as many of their needs as I can while they are with me. My children are performers, they are comfortable on the stage. I direct 2 school-wide shows a year, each in full costume, and every performance they shine.
