My students are 7th and 8th graders placed in a class called Read180 in my urban public school in Minnesota because they are at least two years below grade level in reading. Many students are English language learners who find vocabulary overwhelming when they are reading books on their own, even at their own level. Other students struggle with being able to sound out unfamiliar words and spend most of their independent reading time daydreaming or bored. All of my students love a good story; it's human nature for us all to enjoy stories! But my students simply don't have the tools to access these stories on their own.
