Flexible seating provides a 21st Century Classroom for students. As an educator, there is no better way that I can show my support for a student-centered classroom, than by creating a classroom from a child’s perspective. Already, on a very limited budget, I have bought several flexible seating options for students. The level of attentiveness, and engagement that I observe from students in these situations has made me want to further their options.
How would you feel sitting at a desk for several hours straight? The amount of back pain, discomfort, and boredom that we experience is multiplied in children. Several students in my class now enjoy rocking back in forth on stools. Unfortunately these stools aren't made to do this, and break frequently. The Kore Patented Wobble Chairs and stability balls that I am trying to acquire are made specifically for these types of learners.
When I see a student fidgety and restless, I don't take this as a personal insult to my teaching. I recognize that children need to be able to move. On the flip side, I want for students to be able to get work done as well. Having seating options that accommodate both moving as well as getting to work, are the best answer for my energetic learners to be successful.
