My elementary school is what we call a "tweener school". We have some parent support, but not a lot; we are not "title 1" so we receive no government assistance. What this means is that my sixth graders are delightful young Nevadans living in a state with more earth science than you can shake a stick at and yet they lack experiences in the field. We don't have the money to purchase materials or go on great field trips. They love to learn and are patient with me as I try to provide them with opportunities to apply what I am teaching them in math and science. It is difficult without the proper tools. We talk about using displacement to find the volume of an object, but this is hard with plastic cups. We discuss contour maps, but using a potato to show layers of contour destroys the paper on which we are writing. The children need to be engaged in order to learn and having tools like the items I am requesting will just about guarantee student engagement.
