My students are hard-working, brilliant, and creative. All qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many have gone through more in their few short years than adults have in decades.
When we started together last year (I looped to the next grade with the same group), reading scores were very low: only 11% of students scored at or above grade level in reading. Going into our second year, that number has risen to more than 50%, and our goal for the end of the year is nothing short of 100%. They are not afraid to work hard, but they need--and deserve--books that grab their interest, that push their thinking, and that encourage their creativity.
