My school is located in CA. We have two types of programs for students. One is Structured English Immersion (SEI). The other is Academic Language Acquisition (ALA). The ALA program is taught in Spanish for native speakers. They continue their learning in their primary language, while English is taught. At each grade more English is added and then they transition to all English in Third grade.
Sixty-two percent of our students are English language learners and 85% are socio-economically disadvantaged.
My First grade ALA students are children of Hispanic immigrants. They are all Spanish speakers and learning English. Most of them are first generation US born.
My students are thirsty for learning and information. Many of them lack a variety of experiences that many others take for granted. As their teacher, I try to provide them with as many experiences that I can through books, videos and personal stories.
