I teach in a self-contained first grade classroom in Paterson, New Jersey. Our inner city school district has a majority of students from low economic backgrounds. Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students have limited opportunities with books to build their skills and interest. Keeping them motivated and excited about their future is the key! Providing everything that my students need to be successful in school is of the utmost importance to me!
My first graders come to school every day ready to work and look forward to new, meaningful experiences with good literature. I love to provide a plethora of hands-on activities to practice reading skills and to see the progress throughout the year. When I get to hear them read their first book aloud and witness the joy and pride on their young faces, I feel ecstatic in the knowledge that they are becoming successful readers!
