My students live in an economically depressed rural Maine town. Although over 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunches, they have parents who love and support them. Many are involved in after-school activities such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, band, and sports.
Due to the limited amount of jobs in the area, and many families receiving welfare, the town is limited in the amount of taxes it can raise. This creates a burden for teachers who wish to develop classroom projects, often funding the materials themselves.
Our students work hard and have done very well on their NeCaps and NWEA assessments. I would like to be able to offer them greater opportunities to succeed. Teaching students about finances is difficult using only read aloud books. The camera would help share the books. The store would allow all students to be engaged in the activity. This project would provide a hands-on learning experience.
