10 year old students can not sit still. My 5th grade students want to do things. They want to learn while getting their hands actively involved with the lesson. Unfortunately many students do not come to school with supplies. So many students at this age lack organization and note taking skills. Without supplies, it is even worse. When my students are actively engaged, there are fewer discipline problems. This new way of journaling keeps the students actively engaged all the time. These students are at such an important age. I want to reach each one of them so they can be the best mathematician or scientist that they can be. I also need resources to fall back on to help me stay creative.
Then when it is time for my students to have some peace and quiet with little distractions, they need some privacy so they can show off everything that they just learned in their test or quiz.
