One of the most important phrases I took away with me from college is, "People do not live in a vacuum." Happenings from our community, our state, our country, and around the world affect us positively and negatively every day. We are not sealed in a vacuum. Current events impact our lives.
I teach a diverse group of students who come from an economically disadvantaged background. They love coming to school because it is their happy place. My students have a limited scope of the world and due to financial limitations may not be able to branch out and explore outside of their community. For example, we live in Florida and many of my students have never seen the ocean.
