My students attend school in a suburban area in Missouri. For the most part these students are from the ‘average American house hold.’ Our school is one of 3 high schools in the area and the one with the lowest household income level in the district. Most of these students have a desire to enter into post-secondary education. My students are not in the AP or honors level courses. In addition, I have students who have transferred into our school from unaccredited schools in the city. My students long to be engaged in the material and long to relate to the material used in class. Because my students are your average level students I have to get them to ‘buy in’ to why they need to participate. The students are compliant in their learning meaning they do what I ask of them but I am longing to truly capture and engage them with material they can relate to.
