My students live in a poor farming community in California--but they have big hearts and great minds. Their interests include music, video games, and ANYTHING electronic. That is why last year I decided to make a "Tech Table" in my classroom, where students who finished early could enjoy multiple activities on the laptops in the back of the room. Some of these activities included online educational games while others included research for papers they were writing for History and Science. One of the activities the students enjoyed most was competing in freerice.com, a website that tests vocabulary, and at the same time donates money to feed the hungry in nations that don't have enough food. The students loved the idea of helping other people, and I love the idea of them learning vocabulary! It is a really wonderful site and I want to expand upon these activities this year and really compel my students to be engaged in their learning and in helping others.
