My students are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in a middle school in Colorado. They are all English language learners. Some of them have lived in the United States their whole lives, while others just moved here from a non-English speaking country. The languages spoken in my classroom include Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Lao, and Hmong. They are eager to learn and enjoy ESL class because it's a place where they feel welcome and valued. We celebrate their bilingualism as an asset and a desired skill, not a set back. The students are funny and energetic with lots of stories about their families and culture. We learn so much from each other everyday.
