Our 120 second graders are culturally diverse and are mostly first or second generation immigrants. Although our families work hard, we are a Title 1 school with many of our students receiving free and reduced meals.
Our school is known for its character education program. We consider ourselves an Ohana - the Hawaiian word for family. Our family is very diverse ethnically with students coming from Mexico, the Philippines, India, China, Samoa, Korea, Japan, Africa , and additional countries from around the world as well as the United States.
Due to California's financial crisis, our school resources have shrunk. Second graders no longer have a media period, we have been hit with furlough days, and our school budget for resources such as new literacy books has dwindled. Our class size has increased from 20 to 30.
Our students love to read and our teachers are dedicated to trying to provide our students with books which will encourage a life long love of reading and learning.
