My school is in Las Vegas, NV in a suburban setting. Most students come from working class families and approximately 25% come from low income families. The students are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. In third grade, they are expected to read closely to gain information and to persevere in reading. They work collaboratively in teams, in addition to learning to work more independently. This calls for students to be in their seats for much of the day. Even with "brain break" exercises, moving to different areas for reading groups, and working with partners on the carpet, the students need more outlets for their energy.
