Our school is an urban public school on the East Coast with a focus on international studies and world languages. Although our student body is of low socioeconomic status, the staff is dedicated to providing them with a quality education, strong skills, and a variety of opportunities with the goals of preparing students for college. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts year after year, teachers struggle to find the resources and technologies to do this. Many of us are forced to borrow materials or even buy them using our own money.
My students have an eagerness to learn more about people and societies of the world but seldom leave their neighborhoods or have the opportunity to travel. They hear bits and pieces on television but are without background knowledge and important details to support their opinions.
